Dr. Selman Manuel, DNP, ARNP, PMHNP-BC, PMHNP-C, FNP-C, CARN-AP, CCRN, FIAAN, FFNMRCSI, is an award-winning executive nurse, dual-certified advanced practice provider, addiction and psychiatric-mental health specialist, educator, writer, entrepreneur, and advocate whose career reflects more than two decades of service, leadership, and impact.

Originally from the Philippines, Dr. Manuel began his nursing career as a critical care nurse at the Philippine Heart Center, where he developed the clinical foundation, discipline, and compassion that shaped his career. After immigrating to the United States, he advanced through high-acuity ICU nursing, nursing leadership, quality assurance, patient safety, nursing education, addiction medicine, psychiatric-mental health care, internal medicine, geriatrics, pain management, and integrated healthcare leadership.

He is the Founder and Medical Director of OnPoint Integrated Health & Advanced Psychiatry in Tukwila, Washington, where he leads a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, nurse practitioner-led integrated care model focused on psychiatry, addiction medicine, primary care, dual-diagnosis treatment, chronic disease management, telehealth, and health equity.

His impactful contributions include expanding access to integrated mental health and addiction care, serving patients with substance use disorders, serious mental illness, trauma, chronic disease, immigrant-related barriers, LGBTQIA+ health disparities, and limited access to specialty services.

Dr. Manuel has held major clinical and executive leadership roles, including Executive Medical Director and Owner of OnPoint Integrated Health & Advanced Psychiatry, Executive Medical Director Consultant for Lab On-Call Mobile Diagnostics, Executive Medical Director of Operations Consultant for Avanti Recovery Center, Hospitalist and Addiction Medicine Lead at Cascade Behavioral Hospital, Head Medical Provider at South Sound Behavioral Hospital, and consultant in internal medicine, geriatrics, pain management, and substance use disorders.

His work in addiction medicine spans inpatient detoxification, outpatient medication-assisted treatment, adolescent recovery, adult recovery, telemedicine, dual-diagnosis care, and recovery systems leadership. He has helped build, direct, and strengthen addiction treatment programs across multiple clinical settings while promoting safe, evidence-based, and compassionate care for individuals living with substance use disorders.

In psychiatric-mental health care, Dr. Manuel provides evaluation, diagnosis, medication management, crisis assessment, suicide risk evaluation, treatment planning, psychopharmacology, telepsychiatry, and integrated treatment for mood disorders, anxiety, trauma-related disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, substance use disorders, and complex comorbidities.

As a patient safety, quality assurance, and process improvement consultant, Dr. Manuel has contributed to clinical governance, regulatory compliance, documentation standards, performance improvement, infection prevention, safe patient throughput, and healthcare systems redesign. His Doctor of Nursing Practice project focused on the role of APRNs in triage to enhance patient throughput and safety in acute care.

As an educator and mentor, Dr. Manuel has served as adjunct faculty in psychiatric and mental health nursing, clinical preceptor for NP, RN, MD, and DO learners, and mentor to internationally educated and underrepresented clinicians. His teaching focuses on medication-assisted treatment, psychopharmacology, nursing leadership, nursing excellence, patient safety, performance improvement, quality assurance, ethical decision-making, and lifelong professional development.

His advocacy extends beyond clinical practice. As a Filipino American immigrant and gay Asian healthcare leader, he champions LGBTQIA+ communities, immigrants, minority groups, internationally educated nurses, people living with mental illness and substance use disorders, and underserved populations. His life and work are rooted in representation, visibility, equity, and the belief that healthcare must honor the dignity of every person.

Dr. Manuel is also a contributing writer for Out NW Magazine, where he publishes public-facing scholarship on LGBTQIA+ mental health, addiction recovery, sobriety, healthcare disparities, financial health, intracommunity bias, identity, equity, and public health. Through writing, he transforms lived experience and clinical expertise into education, advocacy, and community empowerment.

He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Addiction Nursing and a Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is also affiliated with multiple professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, Washington State Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, International Nurses Society on Addictions, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Golden Key International Honor Society, ARNP United, Puget Sound Nurse Practitioner Association, Society of Internationally Educated Nurses and Nursing Allies, and the Philippine Nurses Association of America Oregon/Washington Chapter.

His honors and distinctions include academic high honors, scholarship recognition, national and institutional patient satisfaction recognition, patient safety and quality care awards, critical care training awards, and fellowship recognition in addiction nursing and international nursing leadership.

What makes Dr. Manuel’s journey especially impactful is that his leadership was built from adversity. He came from poverty, faced discrimination, homophobia, immigrant barriers, professional doubt, and many moments when people underestimated him. Instead of allowing those experiences to silence him, he transformed them into service.

His journey from bedside to advocacy is not simply a career story. It is a story of resilience, representation, and purpose. It shows how one nurse can begin at the bedside, rise into advanced practice and executive leadership, build systems of care, mentor the next generation, advocate for marginalized communities, and use personal survival as a platform for healing, equity, and hope.
